Tesco 'to change' Clubcard rule which makes one group of customers pay more
Tesco is considering changing its Clubcard loyalty scheme to allow under-18s to benefit from discounts, which has been a source of frustration for young customers and their parents.
Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, has announced it is reviewing its Clubcard loyalty scheme rules, specifically looking into the potential inclusion of under-18s. Currently, young customers such as students and young workers are unable to access certain discounted meal deals, causing dissatisfaction among parents and guardians who have taken to social media to express their frustrations. The current pricing structure sees these younger customers paying £4.25 for meal deals, while adult Clubcard holders can obtain them for £3.85.
The frustration among parents became evident when one mother shared her dismay on Facebook after her teenager was denied access to a Clubcard discount while attempting to purchase a sandwich. The case exemplifies a broader sentiment among families who believe that this restriction is unfair, especially since it limits access to affordable meal options for young individuals. The mother’s comment that “the world’s gone crazy” highlights a growing concern over perceived inequities in the treatment of different age groups within loyalty programs like Tesco’s.
In response to the public outcry, a spokesperson for Tesco confirmed that they are actively reviewing the Clubcard scheme and are hopeful to implement changes to make it more inclusive for younger customers within the year. This potential shift in policy could not only enhance customer satisfaction among younger shoppers but also align with greater trends of inclusivity within retail loyalty programs, ensuring customers of all ages can benefit from the savings they provide.
