15 stones removed from woman's pancreas, some measuring 2 cm

A complex surgery successfully removed more than 15 stones from a 36-year-old woman's pancreas at BMHRC, with some stones being as large as 2 cm.

A rare and intricate surgery was performed successfully at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) to remove over 15 stones from the pancreas of a 36-year-old woman. The stones ranged in size, with some measuring nearly 2 centimeters. Medical experts indicate that finding such a high number of stones in the pancreas is unusual and poses serious health risks. Fortunately, the patient has shown significant improvement and has been discharged from the hospital.

The patient, who hails from Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, had been suffering from chronic pancreatitis accompanied by pancreatic duct stones for an extended period, resulting in unbearable abdominal pain. Imaging studies including CT scans and MRCP confirmed the presence of the stones in the pancreas. The condition caught the attention of the gastro surgery department, highlighting the critical nature of her situation.

The pancreas plays a vital role in digestive processes and the regulation of blood sugar by producing essential hormones. Persistent inflammation of the pancreas can lead to thickening of its ducts and subsequent complications, underlining the necessity for timely surgical intervention in such cases. This incident underscores the importance of specialized medical care in addressing complex surgical challenges and improving patient outcomes in gastroenterology.
