Kenya: Delta40 Raises $20m to Back Early-Stage African Startups
Kenya-based venture capital firm Delta40 has successfully raised $20 million to support early-stage startups across Africa, backed by prominent investors like the Soros Economic Development Fund and the Rockefeller Foundation.
Delta40, a venture firm based in Kenya, has successfully raised $20 million aimed at financing early-stage startups throughout Africa. With investment backing from significant organizations like the Soros Economic Development Fund and the Rockefeller Foundation, the fund comprises a mix of equity, debt, and grants, attracting a diverse pool of 54 investors from 13 countries. Among these participants are development finance institutions, various foundations, family offices, and 25 startup founders, illustrating a strong interest in fostering innovation within the continent. Notably, 14 of the investors are based in Africa, highlighting a growing local investment ecosystem.
The fund is structured to provide initial investments ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, specifically targeting startups in the idea-to-seed stage, with the potential for follow-on investments as the businesses grow. Delta40 aims to focus on key sectors critical to Africa's development, including energy and mobility, agriculture and food systems, and financial services. In light of the latest trends in technology, the firm also plans to incorporate artificial intelligence tools into its portfolio companies, which could add a significant technological advantage to those startups.
Since its inception in 2021, Delta40 has made investments in 16 companies, with notable examples including the logistics platform Lori and the solar fintech company SunFi. This recent funding demonstrates not only the potential for growth and innovation in Africa's startup ecosystem but also serves as a beacon for other investors looking to tap into this burgeoning market. As more funds like Delta40 come to fruition, the support for early-stage ventures is poised to gain momentum, ultimately contributing to economic development and technological advancements across the continent.
