Woman calls to repair washing machine, loses 1.2 million rupees from account

A woman in Gorakhpur lost 12 lakh rupees after calling a fake mechanic for washing machine repair.

In an unusual case of fraud reported from Gorakhpur, a woman named Deepika Dubey found herself swindled out of 12 lakh rupees from her bank accounts. The incident unfolded when she called a number she found on Google to get her washing machine repaired. The fraudster, posing as a mechanic, requested her to send a nominal fee of ₹10 online, which led her to recharge her account.

Following the recharge, Deepika noticed the unauthorized transactions draining her accounts without any alerts or notifications. She had accounts at the State Bank of India and Union Bank, and claims that substantial amounts were withdrawn far exceeding the transaction limits set by her bank. When she filed a complaint at the cyber police station, she emphasized that she had received no messages or alerts related to these transactions, raising serious questions about the security measures in place by her banks.

This incident not only highlights the rising issue of cyber fraud in India but also points to the necessity for individuals to verify contact details before engaging with service providers. As investigations continue, local authorities may need to crack down on such fraudulent operations and enhance public awareness regarding online safety to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
