First the network disappeared from the mobile, then the money... This is how a woman fell victim to e-SIM fraud

A woman in Mumbai lost ₹1.1 million in an e-SIM fraud orchestrated by cybercriminals posing as telecom employees.

In Mumbai, a woman became a victim of an e-SIM fraud scheme where cybercriminals impersonated employees of a telecom company. They contacted her under the pretext of upgrading her SIM card to an e-SIM, which is essentially a virtual SIM card. Once they engaged with her, they provided various reasons to convince her to agree to the conversion, claiming her old SIM was defective or that an e-SIM would improve her internet connectivity.

After gaining her consent, the scammers manipulated the situation further to extract sensitive banking information from her. Within minutes, the criminals drained ₹1.1 million from her bank account. This incident highlights the alarming rise of cyber scams in India, particularly those exploiting the increasing reliance on digital services and mobile technology.

The nodal agency 'I4C', operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, shared this incident on the platform X as part of their effort to raise awareness around cyber scams. It serves as a crucial reminder for users to stay vigilant and informed about the methods employed by cybercriminals to protect themselves from similar fraudulent activities.
