Yle: According to Wolt's CEO, the courier job is not suitable for full-time work
Wolt's CEO, Marianne Vikkula, stated that courier work is better suited as part-time employment due to fluctuating demand, as many couriers pay significant fees to work.
Marianne Vikkula, the CEO of Wolt, recently expressed to Yle that the courier job is primarily suitable for part-time positions since the demand for deliveries varies greatly by day and hour. Many couriers reportedly pay substantial amounts, sometimes up to 900 euros a month, to be able to work under someone else's account. This trend of paying for work accounts came as a surprise to Wolt's management, pointing to unforeseen challenges in the labor market for delivery services.
Vikkula highlighted the unsustainable nature of the high fees for work accounts, emphasizing that the demand for such positions is due to a large number of individuals wanting to work as couriers. Currently, approximately 6,000 couriers are actively employed by Wolt in Finland, while an astonishing 20,000 others are in line waiting for their own accounts. This situation has created a phenomenon where many couriers feel compelled to rent accounts to secure work in a competitive job market.
The high demand for courier work, coupled with insufficient opportunities available, has led to speculation about the implications for Wolt's business model and the gig economy as a whole. Vikkula's comments may signify a need for Wolt to reconsider its employment strategies and the challenges it faces in balancing supply with demand while also addressing the concerns of prospective employees who are eager to join the workforce.
