Rigopiano, the former mayor of Farindola is acquitted. Three officials from the Abruzzo Region are convicted

The former mayor of Farindola was acquitted while three regional officials were convicted in the ongoing legal aftermath of the Rigopiano hotel avalanche disaster that killed 29 people in 2017.

The recent appeal ruling regarding the Rigopiano avalanche tragedy has resulted in mixed outcomes, with three regional officials convicted of negligent disaster-related actions, while the former mayor of Farindola, who was previously sentenced, has been acquitted. The avalanche struck the Rigopiano hotel on January 18, 2017, claiming 29 lives out of 41 total guests and staff. The Court of Appeals in Perugia, under presiding judge Paolo Micheli, handed down two-year sentences to Carlo Visca, Pierluigi Caputi, and Vincenzo Antenucci for their roles in the disaster as part of the regional civil protection service. However, the charges of manslaughter and bodily harm had been statute-barred for these officials, sparking controversy and public outcry during the court proceedings.
