Woman has her account zeroed after falling victim to a fake prize scam of R$ 50,000 in Campo Grande
A woman from Campo Grande lost R$ 1,208 after falling victim to a fake prize scam that misled her with a fraudulent message.
In Campo Grande, a resident became a victim of an electronic scam after receiving a WhatsApp message that promised a prize of R$ 50,000. The incident, reported this week, led to unauthorized transfers totaling R$ 1,208 from the victim's bank account. The initial communication came from a number with area code 34, where the scammer posed as a representative of a fictitious gaming company claiming the woman had won a cash prize.
To claim the supposed prize, the scammer sent a link that, when clicked, resulted in the victim's phone screen being locked, rendering it unusable. After regaining access to her device, the victim realized that the prize was a hoax. During the lockdown of her phone, the perpetrators executed an unauthorized transfer through the Pix payment system for R$ 1,208, which was sent to a payment processing company.
The Civil Police are currently investigating whether this company was involved in complicating the tracking of the stolen funds. This incident raises concerns about the prevalence of online scams targeting vulnerable individuals and highlights the need for increased public awareness surrounding electronic fraud.
