Bauru loses doses of the dengue vaccine due to storage failure
The city of Bauru has lost doses of the dengue vaccine due to temperature fluctuations during storage.
The Epidemiological Surveillance Group (GVE) of SΓ£o Paulo state announced that the city of Bauru has lost doses of the dengue vaccine Qdenga because of a temperature deviation in the storage facility. The affected doses have been collected for analysis and are now deemed unusable. The GVE also stated that it is the responsibility of the municipality to officially report the loss of this batch to the National Immunization Program (PNI).
The Municipal Health Department has indicated that there are currently no available doses of the dengue vaccine in both municipal stock and vaccination clinics. On January 15, a temperature excursion was detected in the equipment used to store the immunobiologicals, which included doses of the vaccine intended for children aged 10 to 14 years. This incident was promptly reported to higher authorities within the State Health Department, in accordance with established protocols.
Following a technical assessment, the authorities instructed the disposal of the unusable vaccine doses. This situation raises concerns regarding the management of vaccine storage and distribution, particularly in light of ongoing efforts to combat dengue fever in the region. The loss of these doses may impact vaccination efforts and public health initiatives aimed at protecting the youth from this preventable disease.
