Don seeks stronger engineering role in energy governance
A legal expert has urged engineers to unify in order to strengthen their influence in Nigeria’s energy governance.
During a memorial lecture commemorating the late Venerable Michael Bamigboye Joda, Yemi Oke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law, emphasized the necessity for unity among engineers in Nigeria. He warned that internal divisions could lead to fragmentation within the profession, ultimately undermining its statutory authority in energy and electricity governance. This discourse took place under the auspices of the Abeokuta Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers during their Engineering Week event.
Oke's address highlighted the importance of engineering standards as outlined in Nigerian energy and electricity laws, stressing that these standards are vital for the profession’s credibility and effectiveness. He urged the Nigerian Society of Engineers, which represents the country's engineering community, to foster collaboration among various engineering disciplines to enhance their collective impact on energy governance. The legal expert's insights suggest a need for a holistic approach to maintenance of industry standards to ensure regulatory compliance and innovation.
The warning comes at a critical time as various specialized engineering groups in Nigeria are increasingly pushing for recognition and authority within their sectors. Oke's statements reflect a broader concern about the need for cohesion among engineering professionals to effectively address the rapidly evolving challenges in Nigeria’s energy sector. Strengthening this collaboration could enable engineers to contribute more significantly to national energy policies, potentially facilitating a more sustainable and effective energy management system in the country.
