Just like coming out of a dark cave: New disaster management centers open in Liepāja and Alsunga
New disaster management centers have been inaugurated in Liepāja and Alsunga, with the Liepāja center being notably significant for its advanced facilities and capacity.
The newly opened disaster management center in Liepāja is especially vital as it stands as one of the two highest category centers in Latvia, providing an enhanced working environment for the 67 rescuers that will operate daily. The stark contrast between the new and old facilities has been highlighted, with firefighters expressing a sense of relief and excitement about the modern amenities that are now available to them.
One firefighter likened the transition from the old premises to the new ones to emerging from a dark cave, emphasizing the vastness and brightness of the new environment. Lieutenant Emīls Tunnis, in charge of the Liepāja center, shared his thoughts on the fantastic feeling that comes with the improved facilities. He pointed out the suitability of the new equipment and space for its intended use, which significantly contributes to the morale and efficiency of the first responders.
Additionally, the new premises come with various improvements, including a small sauna for firefighters, though its use has reportedly been infrequent. Major Edgars Vējš, the commander of the VUGD Kurzeme Region Administration, mentioned several enhancements to the center, indicating a positive shift in the operational capacity of disaster management efforts in the region. This reflects a proactive approach to emergency response capabilities in Latvia, ensuring better preparedness for future challenges.
