Agreement Reached – Icebreakers to Helsinki
An agreement between Finland and the United States has been reached regarding the construction and delivery of icebreakers from Helsinki.
On Wednesday, more detailed information emerged about the icebreaker agreement between Finland and the United States. The shipbuilder Davie Defense, which is the sister company of the Helsinki shipyard, has finalized a deal with the U.S. Coast Guard for the construction of five Arctic Security Cutter-class vessels. Of these, the first two will be built at the Helsinki shipyard, while the remaining three will be constructed in Texas.
In October, Finland signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. to sell a total of 11 icebreakers, with plans for four to be built in Finland and seven in the United States. According to the signed agreement, the first icebreaker is expected to be delivered from Helsinki by 2028. The deal highlights Finland's expertise in icebreaker technology, which will also be vital for the ships being built in the U.S., as stated in Davie Defense's press release.
Construction work is set to begin immediately, led by the Helsinki shipyard in collaboration with the Porin Mäntyluoto shipyard. This agreement not only strengthens ties between Finland and the U.S. in terms of defense and security but also emphasizes Finland's strategic role in Arctic operations and technological contributions in icebreaker capabilities.
