Now the contract has been made - the construction of icebreakers begins in Helsinki
A significant contract between Finland and the United States for the construction of icebreakers has been finalized, commencing with two icebreakers to be built in Helsinki.
A noteworthy development in Finland's maritime industry has emerged with the signing of a contract between Finland and the United States for the construction of icebreakers. The Helsinki shipyard has been awarded a major contract as part of a deal between its sister company Davie Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard. This agreement entails the construction of five new icebreakers, with the first two to be built in Helsinki, while the remaining three will be constructed in Texas, USA. The work is set to commence immediately, with completion of the first vessel expected by 2028.
This project signifies a boost for the Finnish maritime industry and highlights the increasing cooperation between Finland and the U.S. in military and maritime affairs. The construction in Helsinki is complemented by collaborative efforts with the Pori shipyard, which will supply steel structures for the vessels. Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto expressed that this order is a substantial vote of confidence in Finland's maritime technology and production capabilities, indicating the high regard for Finnish expertise in shipbuilding.
The contract complements a previously established memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Finland concerning a total of 11 icebreakers, underscoring Finland's strategic role in ensuring maritime navigation in icy waters. This deal is expected not only to enhance Finland's maritime industry but also strengthen Finland-U.S. relations in strategic and defense sectors, indicating a growing investment in Arctic capabilities and cooperation against challenges posed by climate change and geopolitical tensions in northern seas.
