Police find body in forested area in Teresina and suspect it is a fugitive from penitentiary

Authorities in Teresina discovered a body believed to be that of a fugitive from a local penitentiary, following an anonymous tip-off.

Police in Teresina, Brazil, have uncovered a body of an unidentified man buried in a forested area located in the Gurupi neighborhood, a finding that emerged from an anonymous report to law enforcement. The authorities suspect the body may belong to a fugitive who had reportedly escaped from the Colônia Agrícola Penal Major César Oliveira, a penitentiary situated in the nearby town of Altos. The fugitive is known only by the name Mateus, according to police information.

The discovery initiated a significant response from local law enforcement, with investigators from the State Department of Narcotics Repression (Denarc) involved in the case. Following the tip-off, police commenced excavation work to recover the body, enlisting the help of the Fire Department to aid in the recovery efforts. The presence of multiple units, including the Homicide and Person Protection Department (DHPP), the Scientific Police, and the Legal Medical Institute (IML), signifies the complexity and seriousness of the investigation at hand.

The DHPP has been tasked with further investigating the circumstances surrounding the body’s discovery and its possible connection to local criminal activities, particularly involving escaped prisoners. This event underscores ongoing concerns regarding security and the management of inmates in Brazilian institutions, particularly given the challenges posed by fugitive situations and the repercussions on community safety.
