11-mile underwater tunnel will be world's longest connecting 2 European countries

The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, an 11-mile underwater tunnel, is set to be the world's longest immersed tunnel and rail link by 2029, connecting Denmark and Germany.

The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, an ambitious infrastructure project, is expected to be completed by 2029, establishing a crucial connection between the Danish island of Lolland and Germany's Fehmarn island through an immersive underwater tunnel spanning over 18 kilometers (11 miles). Once finished, this project will be hailed as the longest submerged tunnel in the world, significantly enhancing transportation efficiency between Scandinavia and mainland Europe.

The construction of this large-scale project, estimated to cost around DKK 55.1 billion (£6.4 billion), is supported by substantial funding from the European Union amounting to approximately 1.3 billion euros (£1.1 billion). The importance of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link cannot be understated, as it will not only shorten travel times but will also bolster economic ties and tourism opportunities in the region, providing a direct land connection that currently doesn’t exist.

Danish planning firm Femern is overseeing this extensive project, which they deem Denmark's largest infrastructure endeavor. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link aims to streamline transport routes, catering to both freight and passenger services, thus facilitating smoother cross-border travel and trade. As European infrastructure projects continue to evolve, this tunnel sets a precedent for future transportation solutions, addressing both efficiency and sustainability.
