Breakthrough in EU migration policy. New asylum rules adopted
The European Parliament has adopted changes to the EU asylum procedures aimed at expediting the processing of asylum applications.
On February 10, the European Parliament passed significant amendments to the EU's asylum regulations, with a focus on streamlining the asylum application process. The vote resulted in 408 MEPs supporting the creation of a list of safe countries of origin, while 184 opposed it, and 60 abstained. The countries that will be classified as safe origins include Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Under the new rules, applicants must demonstrate why the regulations should not apply to them due to a well-founded fear of persecution or serious harm if returned to their country. Additionally, the Parliament voted in favor of a provision concerning the application of safe third-country concepts, with 396 votes for, 226 against, and 30 abstentions. This aspect intends to facilitate faster processing by recognizing safer nations for asylum seekers.
The new asylum policy acknowledges that countries aspiring to join the European Union will also be classified as safe states. This decision underscores the EU's strategic approach to managing migration while addressing security concerns, a notable shift in its overall asylum framework that could impact future inflows of migrants from various regions.
