Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, has issued a warning to Nigerians regarding a deceptive video that has been circulating online. This video, which has been manipulated using artificial intelligence, features her likeness and claims to offer substantial financial gains through purported government-backed investments. In her statement posted on social media, Okonjo-Iweala stressed that the video is unauthorized, and she urged the public not to engage with it, highlighting the importance of vigilance against such misleading content.
The fraudulent video suggests that viewers can join an official investment program that promises returns of up to 2,660,000 Naira within a week, purportedly requiring a minimum investment of 380,000 Naira. It falsely claims to allow participants, particularly those over 30, to earn significant money without demanding daily effort or requiring any financial know-how. Such enticing promises play on the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians and pose a significant risk of financial loss to those who may fall for this scam.
Okonjo-Iwealaβs alert comes at a time when digital scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, leveraging new technologies like AI to appear more credible. Her proactive approach reflects the need for awareness and education among the public to protect themselves from financial fraud. As the authorities take action against the video, it serves as a critical reminder of the importance of verifying information from reputable sources before investing in any financial opportunity.
