Nigeria: Govt, UK to Nigerians - Beware of Fake Overseas Job Offers
Nigerian authorities and the UK High Commission have issued a warning to citizens about fraudulent overseas job offers that are being used to traffic victims.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), in collaboration with the British High Commission, has issued a significant warning to Nigerians about the rising threat of fraudulent overseas job offers. During an event in Abuja focused on survivor experiences from trafficking, officials emphasized how these deceptive offers are often a precursor to trafficking, wherein victims are lured with promises of lucrative job opportunities. Instead, they are transported to countries such as Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, where they are forced into cyber-fraud operations.
NAPTIP's representatives highlighted the importance of vigilance among Nigerians, advising them to be cautious of job offers that require applicants to pay upfront fees, recruit through social media, or use tourist visas for work purposes. These red flags are often indicative of scams that could lead to trafficking. The recent event coincided with a series of discussions aimed at raising awareness and providing support for victims affected by such deceitful practices, reinforcing the need for community engagement and education on the matter.
This warning serves to protect Nigerians who may be seeking opportunities abroad but are at risk of falling victim to traffickers. The collaboration between NAPTIP and the UK High Commission underscores a broader commitment to tackle human trafficking, and the message aims to empower citizens with the knowledge they need to identify and avoid these scams. Keeping the public informed and aware is a critical step in combating the increasing incidences of trafficking connected to these fraudulent job offers.
