A foreigner arriving in Vilnius was left without luggage – the theft was captured by airport surveillance cameras
A foreign visitor's luggage was stolen at Vilnius Airport, leading to a police investigation after the incident was captured on video.
On February 10th, Vilnius police received a report from a 28-year-old foreign man regarding the theft of his luggage at Vilnius Airport the previous night. The incident, which occurred around 8:40 PM, resulted in a loss estimated at €2,000. Initial reports indicate that the victim was a foreigner who had just arrived in the city. Surveillance footage from the airport showed that his luggage was taken from the baggage carousel.
Following the man's report, police officials have launched a pre-trial investigation into the theft. The Lithuanian Penal Code specifies that anyone found guilty of stealing someone else's property can face a range of penalties, including compulsory community service, fines, restrictions on freedom, detention, or imprisonment for up to three years. This theft highlights ongoing concerns regarding security and luggage handling at airports, particularly for international travelers.
Authorities are now reviewing the surveillance footage to identify the suspect and recover the stolen property. The incident serves as a reminder for travelers to remain vigilant and secure their belongings while at the airport, as well as the importance of implementing robust security measures to prevent such crimes.
