Spent 1.9 billion on student housing - a new record
Norway marks a historic year in student housing construction with a significant increase in completed units in 2025 compared to the previous year.
In 2025, Norway saw unprecedented growth in student housing construction, with 2,366 new units completed, a nearly fourfold increase from the 662 units finished in 2024. This surge reflects the government's commitment to addressing the pressing need for affordable student accommodations, especially in larger cities where demand is high. Currently, about 5,000 additional units are under construction, indicating ongoing efforts to meet the needs of the growing student population.
During a recent event, which included two government ministers and various stakeholders, the new student housing project in Nordberg, Oslo was showcased. Student Minister Sigrun Aasland emphasized the importance of continuing this momentum in housing development. Despite the successful completion of numerous units, she stressed that the work is far from over, and there are calls for sustained investment and focus on future projects to adequately serve students.
The push for enhanced housing solutions signals a broader recognition of the challenges faced by students in urban areas across Norway. With a clear call to action from government officials, the ongoing dialogue between the student ministry and housing organizations seeks to secure necessary resources and strategies to support the ambitious housing goals for students in the years ahead, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to adequate living conditions for students in higher education.
