Rumor Spreader of IU as a Spy Fined 5 Million Won

A person who spread a rumor that singer IU was a spy has been fined 5 million won by a South Korean court.

Singer IU's agency reported that an individual who disseminated false rumors claiming she was a spy has been fined 5 million won following a court ruling. On November 11, the agency, I-Dam Entertainment, disclosed details about various legal actions taken against individuals who published malicious content about IU, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses. The court's decision reflects the ongoing issue of spreading false information detrimental to public figures, particularly those in the entertainment industry.

The agency further elaborated that there have been multiple legal proceedings involving penalties for seven individuals, with one case involving a 10-month prison sentence suspended for two years. This indicates a stronger stance from legal authorities in South Korea towards protecting celebrities from harassment and defamation, highlighting the severity of spreading false information pertaining to their character and identity.

In addition to the court fines, IU's agency has actively pursued legal action against 96 individuals for various offenses, including defamation and sexual harassment on social media platforms, particularly focusing on international sites. The agency intends to continue taking strong legal measures against those who infringe on IU's honor and safety, pledging no compromises or leniency against the offenders, which underscores a broader societal issue regarding online defamation and the responsibilities of netizens.
