The Indian Air Force is significantly enhancing its combat strength with the recent approval to purchase 114 additional Rafael fighter jets from France, which will boost its squadron count.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is taking major steps to augment its combat capabilities, having recently received approval from the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for the purchase of 114 Rafael fighter jets from France. This addition is expected to directly increase the number of squadrons within the air force. Alongside this acquisition, indigenous aircraft like the LCA Mk1A, LCA Mk2, and AMCA will form a powerful combination aimed at strengthening the air force's operational effectiveness.
Currently, the IAF operates around 29 fighter squadrons, including 12-13 Squadrons of Su-30MKI, 2 of Rafael, 3 of Mirage 2000, among others, while the required number of squadrons stands at 42. However, the situation is deteriorating as older aircraft are being retired, with an expectation that 8-10 more squadrons may retire in the next decade. This scenario necessitates the urgent expansion of the IAF's capabilities, particularly in the context of regional security concerns involving neighboring countries like China and Pakistan.
