The Defense Forces conduct urban battles in public spaces in cooperation with the local government
The Estonian Defense Forces are exploring possibilities to conduct urban combat exercises in public buildings to gain experience in diverse environments.
The Estonian Defense Forces are expanding their training capabilities by collaborating with local governments to conduct urban battle exercises in public spaces. These training sessions aim to provide soldiers with practical experience in various environments, enhancing their operational skills. Recently, exercises were held in partially occupied facilities like the Kohtla-Nõmme community center in Jõhvi, where troops can train during the day and return to barracks for rest at night, creating a balance between rigorous training and necessary recuperation.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy employed by the Defense Forces, which includes the establishment of the Rabasaare urban warfare training facility in Lääne-Virumaa three years ago. The focus on urban settings acknowledges the unique challenges that soldiers may face in city environments and ensures that they are better prepared for real-life situations. Lieutenant Aleksandr Kalnitski highlighted the importance of such exercises for soldiers’ mental and physical well-being, as it allows them to rest and recharge in between rigorous training sessions.
Moreover, the cooperation with local municipalities, like Jõhvi, is pivotal for this effort. Jõhvi has developed a collaborative relationship with the Defense Forces, taking pride in hosting a military barracks that continues to grow. Such partnerships not only bolster the Defense Forces' training effectiveness but also strengthen community ties and support for military initiatives within the local populace, showcasing a positive relationship between civilians and the military in the area.
