India's Home Minister Amit Shah has made a significant announcement regarding the fight against digital fraud, advocating for the universal adoption of the Mule Hunter tool (MuleHunter.ai). This AI-driven software is designed to dismantle the cyber fraud ecosystem by detecting mule accounts—that is, bank accounts used for money laundering and cybercrime. The tool was developed in collaboration with the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub and is expected to enhance the capabilities of banks in real-time detection of fraudulent activities.

The Mule Hunter tool operates using machine learning algorithms that monitor transaction patterns, allowing banks to identify and flag accounts that exhibit suspicious behavior linked to financial fraud. Each month, Mule Hunter is capable of detecting around 20,000 mule accounts. In this context, mule accounts refer to bank accounts that function similarly to mules (pack animals), as they are used to carry illicit money derived from cyber scams, effectively facilitating criminal activities under the radar.
