BJP MLC Subject to 'Digital Arrest', Received Video Call Posing as ATS Officer
A BJP MLC in Uttar Pradesh was targeted by cybercriminals posing as an ATS officer during a video call, attempting to manipulate him into compliance.
In a troubling incident in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the cybercriminals' audacity reached new heights as they targeted a public representative, BJP MLC Shailendra Pratap Singh. The scammers impersonated an officer from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), conducting a video call while dressed in police uniform. This elaborate deception lasted for approximately one and a half hours, during which Singh was pressured under false pretenses regarding an investigation.
The perpetrator initiated the interaction by claiming to be associated with a certain investigative agency and demanded the cooperation of the MLC under the guise of an alleged case. Displaying a police uniform during the video call made the situation initially appear serious, which heightened the tension for Singh and added a layer of credibility to the scam. For the duration of the call, the imposter attempted to maintain control and pressured the MLC into compliance.
Despite the pressure, Shailendra Pratap Singh remained vigilant. As the conversation progressed, he began to suspect that the whole situation was a ruse. Exercising caution, he wisely ended the call before engaging in any financial transactions. This incident not only underlines the increasing risks faced by public officials from cybercriminals but also highlights the necessity for heightened awareness and protective measures against such fraudulent tactics.
