Heat Starts Early in February, Will This Year Break Temperature Records?

Northern India, including Delhi, is experiencing unusual warmth for February with temperatures rising earlier than expected.

In northern India, particularly in areas like Delhi, the weather has shifted significantly in the second week of February, with many regions feeling the warmth usually associated with early spring. The changing conditions have brought bright sunshine, making the winter chill feel like it is fading. Following a period of harsh winds, residents are now noticing a sharp increase in the temperature, with reports indicating that if this trend continues, the region could experience premature summer heat before the end of the month.

According to the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Skymet Weather, February 2026 is expected to be notably warmer than normal. In various locations across the Delhi-NCR region, maximum temperatures are soaring between 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, a significant rise for this time of year. This increase is evident as temperatures in many northern states have jumped from an average of 17-18 degrees Celsius at the beginning of February to around 25-26 degrees Celsius as the month progresses.

As of February 11, skies over Delhi remain clear, and the temperature is projected to reach a maximum of 26 degrees Celsius while the minimum hovers around 11 degrees. Other states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and the plains of Uttar Pradesh are similarly experiencing a quick rise in mercury levels. This unusual pattern suggests a potential shift in seasonal climate dynamics if such warmth persists over the coming weeks and months, raising concerns over environmental impacts and the preparedness for the forthcoming summer months.
