Research Report on Local Currency Effects Released in Siheung City

A study from Siheung City found that the local currency 'Siru' positively impacts consumer spending and regional economic activation.

The Siheung City Institute of Policy Research has published a comprehensive study analyzing the effects of the local currency known as 'Siru', launched in 2018, on consumer behavior and regional business. Utilizing data from consumer surveys and actual sales figures, the report indicates that Siru has successfully promoted local consumption by encouraging residents to shop at local merchants rather than larger retailers or online platforms. It was found that 52.6% of the 2,535 surveyed consumers reported an increase in spending due to using the local currency, with a significant percentage of respondents preferring local businesses over larger marts due to the currency's promotion.

Additionally, the research highlights the economic impact of Siru on affiliated businesses compared to non-affiliated ones. A study of sales data from 2022 to 2024 revealed that businesses accepting Siru, as well as BC card payments, saw a notable increase in total sales, outperforming non-affiliated businesses. The report posits that Siru has not only replaced existing payment methods but has also drawn in new customers, further boosting overall sales, including those from regular card transactions, demonstrating its effectiveness in a competitive marketplace.

The detailed findings show that the average sales for Siru-affiliated businesses were 25.6% higher than their non-affiliated counterparts, with supermarkets and other retail sectors experiencing the most significant sales growth. Additionally, 47.7% of affiliated business owners reported an increase in annual sales since adopting Siru, illustrating the local currency's role in strengthening the economy despite challenges posed by wider economic downturns. This research underscores the growing importance of local currencies as tools for economic revitalization within communities.
