Narva offers tram connection to Narva-Jõesuu

Narva's new urban plan provides for a tramway to improve public transport to Narva-Jõesuu.

The city of Narva has proposed a new urban plan that includes the construction of tram lines, aimed at enhancing public transportation options to the neighboring Narva-Jõesuu area. Local officials have highlighted that the current public transport system is both environmentally taxing and inconvenient for residents. In particular, Narva's chief architect, Peeter Tambu, noted that the tram idea emerged from studies conducted before the general planning commenced, rather than from government discussions.

Younger residents of Narva have shown strong support for the tram system, as they prefer modern and rapid public transport solutions over reliance on private vehicles. One of the key challenges facing Narva is its limited bus service and the high degree of car usage, particularly noticeable during the summer months when thousands flock to Narva-Jõesuu, which houses significant summer cottage zones. This heavy influx exacerbates traffic congestion, making public transport difficult and overcrowded.

Tambu also pointed out the difficulties involved in using the existing bus services, especially during the summer when the buses are often fully packed. Passengers often face long walks from the bus terminals to their residences, and it is impractical for them to take bicycles or other mobility aids. The proposed tram improvements could potentially make public transport to places like Kudruküla faster, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly, thus encouraging its use among local residents and easing traffic congestion in Narva.
