Rwanda: Rwanda Records Highest-Ever Score in Global Corruption Index
Rwanda has achieved its highest score to date in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, a notable improvement from previous years amid deteriorating scores in several traditionally strong countries.
Rwanda has achieved its highest score ever in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2025, earning a score of 58 percent, an increase from 57 percent in 2024. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the country, reflecting its ongoing efforts to combat corruption and improve governance. The report, released by Transparency International (TI) Rwanda, highlights that Rwanda now ranks 41st out of 182 countries globally, an improvement from its previous ranking of 43rd.
In the African context, Rwanda remains one of the top performers, ranking third on the continent alongside Botswana, which also scored 58 percent. These figures indicate that while Rwanda is making progress in fighting corruption, it still has room for improvement to reach the levels seen in leading countries like Seychelles and Cape Verde, which scored 68 percent and 62 percent, respectively.
The CPI report comes at a time when many traditionally strong nations, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, have seen declines in their scores. Factors influencing these declines include weakening oversight and increasing political interference, suggesting that Rwanda's improvements stand out in a challenging global context. By maintaining its leading position in East Africa, Rwanda not only demonstrates its commitment to reducing corruption but also sets a benchmark for its neighbors, particularly as Tanzania, which scored 40 percent, trails behind.
