Enough is enough: Finland demands change to drivers' plight โ€“ "We don't act like the French who throw shit at the wall"

Finnish MEPs and transport industry advocates demand immediate EU solutions for freezing issues with diesel car AdBlue systems.

Finnish Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and representatives from the transport sector are pushing for swift action from the European Commission regarding the freezing problems associated with diesel vehicle emissions reduction equipment, specifically the AdBlue solution. AdBlue, a urea-based liquid used in diesel engines to reduce emissions, freezes at approximately -11 degrees Celsius, which poses significant operational challenges in Finland's harsh winter conditions. This freezing can lead to system malfunctions, requiring expensive repairs and potential disruptions to transportation services.

To illustrate the severity of the issue, a demonstration was held in Brussels on February 3, where MEPs Merja Kyllรถnen and Katri Kulmuni presented a literal freezing demonstration. They showcased AdBlue in a freezer set to -15 degrees, highlighting how quickly the solution froze. In contrast, an alternative urea solution manufactured by Finnish company Kemion Oy remained in liquid form, suggesting potential alternatives to AdBlue that could perform better under extreme cold.

This demand for urgent EU intervention underscores the broader challenges faced by the transport industry in Finland, particularly in adapting to environmental regulations while ensuring operational efficiency. The situation may prompt discussions within the EU about the adaptability of existing regulations to accommodate varying climatic conditions, which could significantly affect the future of diesel vehicles in colder regions.
