Decisions ‘not yet’ made on elevated Green Line alignment as Calgary gathers feedback
Calgary is soliciting public feedback on the proposed elevated alignment for the Green Line LRT amid uncertainties regarding the original tunneling plans.
The City of Calgary has initiated a public consultation process to gather feedback on the latest proposals for the Green Line LRT project, particularly focusing on an elevated track alignment through the downtown area. With ongoing discussions about whether to continue with the original plans for tunneling, residents are encouraged to voice their opinions via an online survey and during both virtual and in-person information sessions. This feedback period runs until March 2, and the insights gathered will contribute to a comprehensive functional study set to be published later this year.
The proposed elevated route will connect significant locations such as the Event Centre and Grand Central Station in Victoria Park, moving along 10 Avenue S in the Beltline before heading north above the CPKC Rail tracks. The route will reach a stopping point above 7 Avenue S.W., interfacing with existing the Red and Blue lines that operate at ground level in the downtown core. The city's objective with this functional study includes refining the design plans, confirming cost estimates, and assessing the impact on current infrastructure to ensure the project aligns with the expectations and needs of Calgarians.
This initiative highlights the city's efforts to engage the community in critical infrastructure decisions, especially concerning urban transit. By prioritizing public involvement in this early phase, Calgary aims to foster broader support for the elevated alignment, which is intended to alleviate transit congestion and enhance urban mobility in a growing city. The outcome of these consultations will play a significant role in shaping the future of the Green Line project as it moves toward construction phases.
