No fewer than 447 prosecuted for dumping refuse in Lagos State
In Lagos State, 447 individuals were prosecuted in 2025 for illegal waste dumping, as reported by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority which aims to enhance enforcement against environmental offenders.
In Lagos State, a recent report from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) revealed that 447 individuals were prosecuted in 2025 for dumping refuse in unauthorized areas. LAWMA's Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbedegesin, discussed the ongoing challenges related to improper waste disposal during an interview. He emphasized that the prevalent practice of residents leaving waste on roadsides in anticipation of collection by LAWMA trucks is undermining effective waste management efforts.
Gbedegesin pointed out that such actions violate the established waste management protocols and lead to resource wastage. The agency is currently facing difficulties in its operations due to residents not following the approved waste disposal systems. He stressed the need for a behavioral change among the populace to align with proper waste management practices, highlighting that indiscriminate waste disposal is a significant issue affecting the state's environmental sanitation.
As LAWMA looks to enhance its enforcement actions against these environmental offenders, it aims to increase public awareness and improve compliance with waste disposal regulations. The agency's efforts reflect a broader initiative to promote environmental cleanliness in Lagos, which is one of the most populous cities in Nigeria, thereby reducing illegal dumping and ensuring efficient waste management in the region.
