The regions of Morocco affected by floods prepare for the return of thousands of displaced people
Moroccan authorities are preparing for the return of displaced residents in flood-affected regions, particularly in the city of Al Qsar Al Kabir.
Following severe flooding in northern Morocco, particularly in Al Qsar Al Kabir, local authorities are gearing up for the return of displaced citizens. The mayor, Mohamed Simo, announced cleaning efforts in the city and stated that water and electricity management companies are also conducting maintenance to ensure the safety of utilities before residents return to their homes. Significant progress has been made in draining water levels from the Oued Makhzen dam, although a specific date for the return of tens of thousands of evacuated residents has not been provided.
The flooding, which began on January 28, caused substantial damage and prompted the evacuation of residents to nearby cities. In his remarks to Anadolu Agency, Mayor Simo confirmed that the authorities have worked to reduce the water levels significantly, paving the way for residents to eventually return. He is also scheduled to meet with local trade associations, including sellers of vegetables and meats, to discuss securing essential supplies for the city in preparation for the residents' return.
As preparations continue, the focus remains on ensuring safety and restoring essential services to the affected areas. The recent flooding was the result of the Oued Loukkos river overflowing due to the Oued Makhzen dam being filled to 156% of its capacity, highlighting the impact of extreme weather events in the region. The response from local officials and the implementation of emergency measures will be crucial in facilitating a smooth transition for residents returning to their homes after such a challenging ordeal.
