Cellulose exports grow, but sector may have imbalance

Brazil's cellulose export sector continues to expand, reaching record levels, but faces potential challenges ahead.

Brazil has seen significant growth in its cellulose export sector, which has emerged as a crucial component of its agribusiness backbone. In 2025, the sector's external revenues amounted to $16.5 billion, representing 9.8% of the total $169.3 billion in agribusiness exports, according to the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex). Notably, cellulose exports have surged since the early 2000s, with volumes increasing from 3 million tons with revenues of $1.4 billion to an impressive 22.25 million tons generating $10.25 billion in the previous year. This steady growth trend indicates that Brazil is ramping up its cellulose supply on the international market significantly, with an additional 5 million tons being added approximately every five years.
