This is the most prominent... Palestinian warning of Israeli measures against Al-Aqsa during Ramadan
Palestinian authorities have warned of restrictive measures by Israel aimed at limiting access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan.
The Jerusalem Governorate issued a warning about systematic restrictions that Israeli authorities plan to impose on worshippers trying to access Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan. These restrictions reportedly include a cap on the number of worshippers allowed, limiting it to 10,000 people on Fridays, and imposing age criteria that would restrict access to men above 55 years old and women above 50 years old only. The Governorate described these measures as a severe violation of the right to worship, which is protected under international laws and conventions.
The statement continued by asserting that the restrictions are part of a broader strategy to alter and control the demographics of Jerusalem and to sever its connections with the Palestinian territories. It called these actions an attempt by the Israeli authorities to impose unilateral realities on the ground that would affect the historical and legal status quo of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Notably, the statement emphasizes that such measures are a significant affront to both Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, the Jerusalem Governorate highlighted that all of the occupation's actions against Jerusalem and its religious sites are unlawful and without legitimacy according to international law. They reiterated that Ramadan, as a month of worship, should not be subjected to any constraints imposed by the occupying power, underscoring the persistent tensions related to access and rights at one of Islam's holiest sites.
