Pernambuco offers more than 33,000 free castrations and microchipping for dogs and cats; learn how to schedule

Pernambuco is providing over 33,000 free surgeries and microchipping for dogs and cats, starting February 19, 2023, via a mobile unit.

The state of Pernambuco in Brazil has announced a program that will offer over 33,000 free sterilizations and microchipping for dogs and cats. Beginning on February 19, 2023, a mobile unit known as 'castramóvel' will traverse the Greater Recife area and various municipalities in the interior of the state to facilitate this initiative. Pet owners must register online to schedule an appointment as the castramóvel moves through different cities, with a gradual opening of schedule slots currently confirmed for Recife and Camaragibe in the metropolitan region.

According to the government of Pernambuco, the surgical sterilizations will be available for dogs and cats of all sizes, accompanied by the implantation of a microchip for identification. Importantly, the microchip serves solely for identification purposes and does not include GPS functionality, meaning it will help in recovering lost pets but will not track their real-time location. This initiative aims not only to control the pet population but also to encourage responsible pet ownership through the identification of animals.

The program is part of a broader governmental effort to address issues related to stray animals and overpopulation in urban areas, highlighting the importance of sterilization and responsible pet care. As more pet owners take advantage of these free services, the success of the initiative could lead to a reduction in stray animal cases and promote a healthier community for both pets and humans alike. Such measures represent a significant step towards improving animal welfare in the region.
