From refrigerator to air conditioning: artists need to donate goods to use one of the main theaters in MS

The Mato Grosso do Sul Cultural Foundation has begun requiring donations or services from artists to use a key cultural venue, sparking criticism.

The Mato Grosso do Sul Cultural Foundation (FCMS) has implemented new requirements for the use of the Aracy Balabanian Theater, located at the José Octávio Guizzo Cultural Center in Campo Grande, effective the second half of 2025. Under these rules, artists and cultural producers must provide donations of goods or services in exchange for using the public space. This requirement has drawn significant criticism from the artistic community, who argue that it could hinder access to important cultural venues.

Established in the 1990s, the Aracy Balabanian Theater is a crucial platform for theatre, dance, and various artistic expressions in the region. The FCMS has asserted that this new model ensures the venue's sustainability and accessibility, emphasizing a commitment to keeping cultural spaces available to the public. However, many artists fear that such financial and resource demands could disproportionately impact smaller groups and emerging talents, potentially limiting the diversity of performances available to local audiences.

In response to feedback, the FCMS stated that the aim of these changes is to enhance the theater's infrastructure and ensure that it can continue to serve the community effectively. While the foundation believes that these measures will ultimately contribute to a more sustainable and democratic cultural model, the ongoing backlash from artists and producers highlights the tension between maintaining cultural funding and accessibility in the face of administrative changes.
