Estonian coach arriving with Lithuanian delegation demands the return of revoked Olympic accreditation

An Estonian coach has filed a lawsuit against the ISU demanding the return of his Olympic accreditation, which was revoked following accusations regarding his coaching methods.

An Estonian coach, who was included in the long list for the Olympic team at the suggestion of the Lithuanian skating federation last September, is now facing serious challenges. Just before the Olympic Games, allegations surfaced from one of his former trainees in Latvia regarding his coaching methods. In response, the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee (LTOK) swiftly sought recommendations from the International Skating Union (ISU) and consulted with Lithuanian Olympic team member Meda Variakojyte, who had been trained by the coach, as well as her father and the Latvian Olympic Committee.

Meda Variakojyte and her father expressed no complaints against the coach. However, the ISU's strict recommendation received on Saturday called for the suspension of the coach's activities at the Olympic Games due to the allegations. Consequently, immediate action was taken to implement the suspension. This situation has raised significant concerns about how the allegations could affect the integrity of the Olympic Games and the participation of athletes trained under this coach.

In a surprising turn of events, the Estonian coach has filed a lawsuit against the Sport Arbitration Court demanding the annulment of the ISU's decision and the immediate lifting of the temporary disqualification from participating in ISU events, including the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. This appeal highlights the complexities involved when allegations arise against coaches and the potential implications for both the coach's career and the athletes associated with him, underscoring the need for clarity and fairness in sports governance.
