An undesired person in the Lithuanian Olympic team: coach's accreditation revoked due to scandal
A Lithuanian skating coach's accreditation has been revoked following allegations of improper working methods, despite support from one of his trainees.
A scandal has emerged within the Lithuanian Olympic skating team, as coach R. Reinsalu has had his accreditation revoked due to allegations made by a former trainee from Latvia. The Lithuanian Skating Federation had included Reinsalu in the long list planned for the Olympics as early as September of the previous year. However, just before the upcoming Olympic Games, accusations regarding his coaching methods surfaced widely, prompting immediate action from the Lithuanian Olympic Committee (LTOK).
In response to the allegations, the LTOK sought recommendations from the International Skating Union (ISU) and engaged in discussions with MD Variakojyte, a member of the Lithuanian Olympic team who had previously trained under Reinsalu, as well as her father and representatives from the Latvian Olympic Committee. While both M. Variakojytė and her father did not voice any complaints against Reinsalu, the ISU's strict recommendation led to LTOK acting promptly to suspend his involvement in the Olympics.
As a result of this decision, M. Variakojytė will be accompanied by the sports director of the Lithuanian Skating Federation, Lilija Vanagienė, during her participation in the Games. Her competition is scheduled for February 17, highlighting the critical nature of ensuring a stable and supportive environment for athletes amid the controversy surrounding their coach.
