Former Commander of the Defense Forces: There is a Growing Demand for Systems Suitable for the North
Geopolitical tensions are increasing interest in Lapland for defense and related industries according to former Defense Forces commander Timo Kivinen.
Geopolitical tensions have heightened the interest of defense and other industries in Lapland, as stated by former commander of the Finnish Defense Forces, Timo Kivinen. He noted that the changing security situation presents opportunities for local businesses, particularly those that can provide products and systems capable of operating effectively in Arctic conditions. Kivinen emphasized that the environmental conditions in the North differ greatly from those in Central Europe or Ukraine, thus creating a niche market for companies that can develop Northern-adapted solutions.
Kivinen, who served as commander from 2019 to 2024 and is currently a senior advisor at the consulting firm Miltton, pointed out that the best opportunities lie in systems and products that can withstand extreme cold. He predicts a rising demand for these specialized solutions, which will be essential for both military and civilian applications in the region. As businesses diversify their focus to cater to these needs, the potential for innovation and economic growth in the defense sector of Lapland increases.
In response to this demand, initiatives like the Arctic Drone Expertise Center project are being launched, organized by the Lapland Chamber of Commerce. This center aims to offer cold testing for drones applicable in both civilian and defense contexts, reflecting the region's strategic importance. Such projects not only support local industries but also position Lapland as an active player in the Arctic defense landscape, signaling a shift in focus towards specialized technology and expertise that can adapt to the challenging northern environments.
