Tough news for Iivo Niskanen – Main rival out
Finnish skier Iivo Niskanen benefits as Norwegian competitor Mattis Stenshagen withdraws from the Olympics due to illness.
Finnish cross-country skier Iivo Niskanen has received favorable news with the withdrawal of his main rival, Norwegian skier Mattis Stenshagen, from the Olympic Games. Stenshagen has been suffering from flu symptoms and has decided to return to Norway, as announced by the Norwegian team on Tuesday evening. His absence is significant as he was considered one of the key competitors in the 50-kilometer mass start race, a pivotal event for both Niskanen and the Norwegian team.
During the recent races, Stenshagen had shown strong performances, particularly in the traditional style events, but he struggled at the start of the free technique segment of the combined race last Sunday. Following this, his condition has worsened, leading to his decision to withdraw. In light of Stenshagen's exit, Niskanen’s chances of success in the upcoming 50-kilometer race have significantly improved, as his primary competition is now diminished.
With Stenshagen out, the Norwegian team still features strong contenders for the race, including Johannes Klæbo and Martin Nyenget, who are both in excellent shape. Emil Iversen remains an unpredictable factor, while Harald Amundsen's current form is questionable. Overall, Niskanen can now take to the course with increased confidence, knowing that his main competitor is no longer in the running for the medal positions during the event set to take place in Milano-Cortina.
