Iivo Niskanen is out – Yle: here’s the reason

Finnish skier Iivo Niskanen will not participate in the World Cup finals in Lake Placid, USA, due to health concerns following an illness before the Olympics.

The Finnish Ski Association announced its team for the World Cup finals set to take place in Lake Placid, USA, next weekend. Notably missing from the team is Iivo Niskanen, who also skipped the previous weekend's World Cup events in Norway. Head coach Teemu Pasanen elaborated that Niskanen decided not to travel after assessing his health status post-illness, which he experienced in the lead-up to the Olympics, indicating he has not yet recovered sufficiently to compete at a high level.

Niskanen's absence is significant, not only because he is a prominent figure in Finnish skiing, but also because he was expected to deliver stellar performances at these finals. The team traveling to Lake Placid will see other male skiers like Ville Ahonen, Niko Anttola, Emil Liekari, Arsi Ruuskanen, and Lauri Vuorinen participate in his stead. Additionally, Joni Mäki has also opted out of the final competition for health reasons, which raises concerns over the health and performance levels of the Finnish skiing squad.

On the women’s side, the Finnish team includes athletes Jasmi Joensuu, Jasmin Kähärä, Johanna Matintalo, and Kerttu Niskanen, who will represent Finland in the women’s category. The selection reflects the Ski Association’s focus on fielding a competitive squad while managing athletes' health as they compete in important events towards the end of the season.
