Evia Monastery: Funding Secured for the Restoration of the Monastery of St. Nicholas Sicilian

Funding has been secured for the restoration of the Monastery of St. Nicholas Sicilian located in Evia, Greece.

The Regional Governor of Central Greece, Fanis Spanos, has signed the decision to include the project, titled "Stabilization and Restoration of the Main Church of the Monastery of St. Nicholas Sicilian in Evia," in the program "Central Greece 2021-2027." This initiative aims to provide extensive restoration to the monastery, which is a significant cultural heritage site. It is overseen by the Ministry of Culture, ensuring that the methods used are in line with accepted preservation practices.

The restoration plan includes several key tasks. These consist of completing the exploratory works to examine the foundations of the main church and the chapel, as well as stabilizing and showcasing archaeological findings. Additionally, provisions have been made for proper drainage of rainwater, which is essential for the preservation of the structure. These steps are vital for maintaining the integrity of the site and for preventing further damage.

Moreover, part of the restoration involves the removal of modern cement plastering and concrete structures on the exterior of the church, which have obscured its original architectural features. The project also includes the stabilization of mural fragments on the southern wall of the main church, which will be undertaken by an authorized archaeologist from the Evia Antiquities Department. This restorative effort highlights the importance of cultural preservation and recovery of historical sites in Greece, especially in a region rich in history like Evia.
