Police corruption and money laundering: warrants executed in Divinópolis and Oliveira

Operation 'Blackout' targets a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, gun possession, and police corruption in Divinópolis and Oliveira, Brazil.

Operation 'Blackout', launched on Tuesday, October 10, seeks to execute 30 search and seizure warrants and 15 preventive arrest warrants in the cities of Divinópolis and Oliveira. The operation aims to dismantle a criminal organization under investigation for various serious crimes, including drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal possession of firearms, and corruption within the police force. The operation is conducted by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) with support from both the Civil and Military Police.

So far, one search warrant has been executed at the residence of a lawyer, and one preventive arrest has been made of a civil police officer suspected of leaking confidential information regarding investigations to other agents. The names of the individuals involved have not been disclosed. Authorities highlight the significant role of this operation in addressing the intertwining issues of drug-related violence and police misconduct in the region.

The investigation reportedly commenced following a series of homicides in Oliveira linked to disputes among drug trafficking factions. This context is crucial, as the police corruption aspect exacerbates the challenges of law enforcement in containing criminal activities related to drugs and violence. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts to tackle organized crime in Brazil and the importance of accountability within police ranks to restore public trust in law enforcement.
