STT Director and Saulius Skvernelis Attended Meeting of Former Police Chiefs Last Week
The meeting involved former police chiefs, including Saulius Skvernelis, amidst a corruption investigation where Skvernelis was interviewed as a special witness.
On February 5, a meeting was held among former police chiefs, including Saulius Skvernelis, who recently found himself under scrutiny in a corruption investigation by the Special Investigation Service (STT). This investigation involves allegations concerning corruption within the State Plant Production Inspectorate, prompting authorities to question Skvernelis as a special witness. The timing of the meeting coincides closely with these developments, raising questions about the nature of their discussions.
Participants of the meeting have denied discussing any relevant matters related to the corruption investigation during their gathering. Notably, the news agency BNS has reported no evidence to suggest that such discussions took place. The police organized the gathering as part of an annual tradition, indicating that preparations for the meeting had been in motion since December of the previous year, thus separating it from the ongoing investigation they are currently facing.
The STT's representative noted that the director, who is a former police commissioner himself, attended the meeting at the invitation of the current police commissioner, ArΕ«nas Paulauskas. This annual meeting serves to gather former police leaders, aiming at fostering dialogue and collaboration among them, despite the surrounding controversies and public scrutiny related to Skvernelis' involvement in the ongoing investigation.
