Migrants: EU gives final green light to the list of safe countries

The European Parliament has approved a regulation establishing a list of safe third countries, including Egypt and Tunisia, allowing for expedited repatriation of rejected asylum seekers.

The European Parliament recently voted in favor of establishing a definitive list of safe third countries, which includes nations such as Egypt, Tunisia, and Bangladesh. The regulation, which passed with 408 votes in favor, supports changes to the concept of safe countries of origin, emphasizing a stricter approach towards asylum claims in the EU. Importantly, this legislation allows for immediate repatriation of asylum seekers whose claims are rejected, eliminating the delays previously caused by appeals or suspensions in the process.

European lawmaker Susanna Ceccardi highlighted the benefits of the new regulation, stating that rejected asylum seekers could now be promptly returned to their home nations without extensive delays. This efficiency aligns with the EU's broader migration strategy, which aims to streamline asylum procedures and enhance border security. The new framework also allows rejected applicants to wait in designated hubs in countries like Albania while their cases are finalized, a strategy designed to deter fraudulent claims and improve overall migration management.

The introduction of nations like Egypt and Tunisia as "safe" raises questions about the treatment and conditions for migrants in these countries. The European Commission will monitor the situation within these nations to ensure that they uphold human rights standards. Hence, while the regulation aims to address immediate migration challenges, its long-term implications on human rights and international relations in the context of migration remain critical considerations for the EU.
