List of safe countries of origin approved in the EU

The EU Parliament has approved its first list of so-called safe countries of origin for asylum seekers, which allows for expedited deportations without refugee status assessments.

The European Union Parliament has marked a significant step in its immigration policy by approving its first-ever list of 'safe countries of origin' for asylum seekers. This list includes nations like Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco, Tunisia, and all EU candidate countries, with exceptions made for countries engaged in armed conflicts. The classification aims to speed up the processing of asylum applications, permitting the direct deportation of individuals back to these countries without the need for their asylum requests to be evaluated.

In addition to the safe countries list, new regulations surrounding safe third countries were also accepted, enabling asylum seekers to be rejected without proper assessment if they have ties to, transited through, or can be transferred to a third country. This policy relies on the existence of bilateral agreements or EU-level arrangements with the respective countries. Such measures are indicative of a shift toward more stringent immigration controls within the EU, reflecting a growing influence from right-wing and far-right political factions across member states.

The new laws, which will come into effect in June, are viewed by supporters as a method to streamline immigration processes while critics accuse the EU of neglecting the vulnerabilities of asylum seekers. This development highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining national border security and upholding humanitarian obligations to provide refuge to those fleeing persecution. The implications of these changes will likely resonate through EU member nations, sparking debates on immigration policy and human rights considerations in the coming months.
