Shiffrin's slalom leaves USA without a medal after speed event

At the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, the American ski team, favored to win, failed to secure a medal in the slalom event after a disappointing performance by Mikaela Shiffrin.

The women's team event at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics saw the Austrian duo of Ariane Rädler and Katharina Huber claim victory, leaving the American favorites, including Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson, without medals. Breezy Johnson had initially triumphed in the speed event earlier in the day, but in the slalom, her performance alongside Shiffrin was lackluster at best, as both skiers finished outside medal contention.

American skier Breezy Johnson won the speed event, narrowly beating Austria's Ariane Rädler by just 0.06 seconds, with Italian Laura Pirovano taking third. With this background, expectations were high for Shiffrin, the overall leader of the World Cup series and a dominant force in slalom this season. However, she fell short, finishing with the 15th-best time, which rendered her and Johnson's efforts in the slalom less impactful, resulting in both skiers ending up in fourth position overall.

The Austrian pair Huber and Rädler’s victory, clocking in at 2:21.66, emphasized the difficulty for the American team to secure gold despite their pre-event domination in the slalom. The silver medal was snagged by the German team (+0.05), consisting of Kira Weidle and Winkelm, highlighting the competitive nature of the event and the unexpected outcomes for previously favored competitors.
