The tram in Ružinov is set to be quieter and faster. The city is launching a 100-million-euro project for the third time

Bratislava is launching its third tender for the reconstruction of the tram line in Ružinov, aiming to reduce noise and increase speed despite previous failed attempts due to cost issues.

The city of Bratislava is embarking on its third attempt to launch a tender for the reconstruction of the tram line in the Ružinov district, with an estimated budget of 100 million euros. Previous tenders were either canceled due to a low number of bidders or unacceptably high bids. This third attempt, however, faces skepticism from construction representatives who warn that similar issues may arise again. The modernization initiative aims to improve the quality of public transportation by reducing noise pollution and increasing the maximum speed of trams from 30 to 50 kilometers per hour.

The overall project encompasses a 3.5-kilometer stretch of tram line, which has not seen significant upgrades since the 1990s. The first phase of the reconstruction will focus on the segment between the Líščie nivy and Chlumeckého stops, extending from Bajkalská street to the end of Ružinov. Following this, work will begin on the segment in the city center, from Americké námestie to Legionárska. The changes will involve replacing the current mechanical joints, which are spaced every 20 meters, with new welded joints, leading to smoother and quieter rides for passengers.

This modernization project holds significant implications for public transport in Bratislava, as it aims not only to enhance the speed and comfort of tram travel but also to address environmental concerns related to noise pollution. Successful execution of this project could set a precedent for future infrastructure projects in the city and improve overall municipal transportation efficiency and public satisfaction.
