Suomu Expands Its Slopes - More Accommodation Needed for Viable Chairlift Investment

The Suomutunturi ski resort in Kemijärvi, Finland, plans to invest over ten million euros in ski slopes and accommodation in the coming years to enhance the area.

The Suomutunturi ski resort located in Kemijärvi, Finland, has announced plans to invest more than ten million euros in the development of ski slopes and accommodation over the coming years. According to owner Kari Tirkkonen, this investment aims to particularly enhance the Eastern Suomu region. Last summer, significant groundwork was carried out, including the moving of 45,000 cubic meters of earth and the construction of a water management system for the slopes. These developments are geared towards creating a wider slope designed for families and beginner skiers.

Tirkkonen mentioned that the infrastructure improvements are also preparing for the installation of snowmaking pipes and lighting systems. Currently, the Eastern Suomu ski area relies on natural snow, but with the recent upgrades, the establishment of a snowmaking system is now feasible. The snowmaking system and new lighting are set to be completed within the next two years, with a target capacity for snow storage exceeding 100,000 cubic meters annually.

In addition to the slope expansions, Tirkkonen owns both the Suomutunturi resort and the hotel situated at its base, which has recently added 15 panoramic villas in time for the Christmas season. The ongoing developments aim to not only enhance the skiing experience but also boost accommodation options to make the investment in a new chairlift more justifiable, ensuring the resort can serve a larger number of visitors effectively.
